Mid-Century Modern (Whether We Knew It or Not)
Sometime in the 1960s, wall-to-wall carpeting was installed—right over the hardwood floors.

Decades later, when my dad finally replaced it, the salesman took one look and said, “Oh yeah, I know that line. Indestructible.”

Not a word about it being attractive.

The Bathroom Situation
Before a half bath was added in the basement in the late ’60s or early ’70s, we had just one full bathroom on the main floor.

It was a small house, but I don’t remember it feeling small. We were always outside—rain, snow, or sunshine—so tight quarters rarely felt tight.

My mother might have had a different opinion.
